Question by soccerocr41: Do you think U.S.A will be hosting a Winter or summer olympics any time soon?
I know U.S has hosted in the past but it seems like there aren’t any plans to host the games again. Do you know if U.S is hosting soon?

They bid for the 2016 Games, have no plans to bid for the 2018 Winter Games. Further out hasn’t been determined yet, but the US will likely host again in the next 10 or 15 years or so. The IOC tends to alternate games to different continents, and the US will almost certainly get the next North American Games, probably the next few (if history is any guide).

I do know the the Lake Tahoe/Reno area are planning on making a serious bid for 2022 Winter Games. They have a pretty good shot too. Much of the infrastructure is all ready in place as the area is a world class resort area.
They did host the 1960 Winter Games in Squaw Valley. The games were much smaller then.
They had a fairly large delegation in Vancouver the last couple of weeks to see what they could learn.

Winter Olympics might be, but maybe not summer Olympics. Recently, there is a news article about the new president of the U.S. Olympic Committee saying that it is an embarrassment that they lost the bid for Chicago in the 2016 Olympics given that they spend 80 million on advertisement and others. Plus, the lost bid by New York City for the 2012 already made the committee not happy. So unless the IOC send out an invitation to the U.S. Olympic Committee, otherwise, they won’t plan any bid for the Summer Olympics during this time

Not in the next 8 years I think. After Sochi I’ll bet the next winter olympics will go to South Korea, it’s obvious. From 2002 the winter olympics were in North America, Europe, North America again and then in Sochi – Europe. The olympics after Sochi will most likely go somewhere besides North America or Europe meaning Asia or other parts of the world will have a good chance.
Summer? Well, 2012 is in Europe, but 2016 will be in the Americas(Brazil, South America). So the next one after Rio will probably be outside of the North/South America continent so 2020 might go to Asia or other parts of the world besides the American continent so I don’t see the USA hosting the olympics anytime soon. Maybe summer of 2020 but might be a long shot.
We should have hosted the summer olympics in 2012! We should have built that olympic stadium in New York City!

I would have to say NO, and here is why:
The games have been hosted in North America, either U.S. or Canada MANY times over the last 34 years. For example:
Winter- 1980 (Lake Placid), 1988 (Calgary), 2002 (Salt Lake City), 2010 (Vancouver)
Summer- 1976 (Montreal), 1984 (Los Angeles), 1996 (Atlanta)
I know that 34 years seems like a long time, but for one continent to host a world-wide event 7 times over that span is a lot. There was talk of New York hosting the summer games in 2012, but London was awarded those games. Chicago was hoping to get the bid for 2016, but that ended up going to Rio De Janiero.
Personally, I am happy that Rio got the 2016 games because it is the largest city on a continent that has NEVER hosted the games. Further, Chicago losing out was considered a knock against the United States and President Obama, who lobbied hard to get the Olympics in his hometown. But, keeping with the fact that the Olympics is a global event, we here in America cannot expect the games to be held here too often can we? So, there is no shame at all in Chicago not getting the Olympics. It just wasn’t our time this time. Just based on our impact on the global economy and the diversity of our country, the US will always be in the running for the Olympics. But, that does not mean we are always entitled to it.
Beyond 2016, I do not even know which city will end up with the Summer Olympics. Toronto and Monterrey, Mexico are in the running for 2020 and 2024. From the US, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Tulsa are bidding for 2020, but none as of right now are being considered for 2024.
With the past two winter games being on our continent, I do not anticipate them being in the US anytime soon. However, seeing that less of the globe has suitable winter climates for the winter games, there is a greater chance that they will be here again sooner than the summer games. A of right now, Denver is the most notable US city bidding for a future winter Olympics, perhaps for 2022.
Sochi, Russia will host the 2014 winter games.
Hope that clears things up.

There is nothing concrete, as far as I know, about a city in the USA putting forth a bid for a future Summer or Winter Olympics.
On the other hand, here’s an item that seems very strange today. The 1976 Winter Olympics were originally awarded to Denver, but when a bond issue to finance the venue’s construction was put on the ballot, the citizens of Denver voted it down! The issue was over huge cost overruns. The IOC had to scramble, and Innsbruck, Austria stepped in and hosted the Games for a second time. (Innsbruck had hosted the Winter Olympics in 1968.)
Wow. Voters demanding fiscal responsibility. Who would’ve thunk that?

I don’t think so. The world seems to really hate the USA so I don’t think the IOC will allow us to get an Olympics for a really long time. Chicago should have easily won the bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics but we went out in the first round. Who did they give it too…Rio….a city with one of the highest crime rates in the world.

Nope don’t think so. I don’t think alot of Americans even want to host the games, It would cost to much and put any city in debt. It’s nice to visit the Olympics and then go home!

The IOC would love to bring the games to Africa.
I think if South Africa has success with the World Cup later this year, then South Africa could be in the drivers seat if it bids for the 2020 games.
For the longest time the IOC has aimed to bring the games to every continent at least one time. South Africa has the economy to support the bid and construction. South Africa has modern infrastructure. Apartheid is a thing of the past at least as far as running the government goes.
As for the U.S., WInter games won’t happen any time soon because they’ve just occurred in Canada. But the Summer games in 2020 are not out of the question. But they are not a sure thing either.
