How does the VoIP technology work ?

Question by Mk: How does the VoIP technology work ? Usually to make clear calls we need a fixed assigned/dedicated bandwidth so circuit switching technology(FDM,TDM) is used. Packet switching is only used only when the required bandwidth is not guaranteed like to data communications. However, IP is based on packet switching if Im not wrong.
So how can something like voice, which requires timely fast delivery with quality, be transmitted over the Internet protocol?
Wont certain packets follow different routes and then it should take extra time at the receiver end to reorder them?

Or do you want the recommendation of “some guy” on the internet? Vonage, a Level 3 player, will probably work. Not my choice, but it’s safe.
