The Digital Vision program was initiated to provide grants to aspiring thought leaders in the areas of marketing and advertising. Econsultancy selected five winners from the scores of applications received. Grant winners include:

Boris Grinkot, Director of Content and Education at Lean Startup Machine, whose project will provide marketers with heuristic tools to determine optimization and testing opportunities for their websites based on years of teaching, secondary research and consulting.

Julia Nalven, a Market Research Analyst at Vizu, who will apply mathematical analysis to the optimization of online advertising campaigns. The project will show that rigorous data analysis will lead to will lead to the optimization strategy to maximize impact of a brand?s ad budget.

Allison Aldridge-Saur, an active contributor to the high tech and web field for 12 years. As a member of the Chickasaw Nation, Allison’s project will look at how “Tribe” has evolved to a social media marketing term, and how Native American tribal characteristics reveal substantive practices that build more fulfilling, stronger and highly committed online communities.

Other grants will be provided to projects that will look at testing for the ‘tipping points’ in social media, and a series of interviews/case studies with non-profits using social media.

Grant winners will join Econsultancy at South by Southwest on March 12 at an SWSX Party to provide an overview of their projects.

As a lot of you know, the RE market is crazy slow right now and we want to take this time to add some new clients. I have been inside sales for the past 7 years, but HE isn’t really the ‘salesy’ type, so I thought I would go out and spread the company name.

Any good marketing ideas anyone can share with me to build his business? Gimmicks?? Once we can get them to try him out, they’ll LOVE his work!

Go talk to mortgage brokers in person. They usually order the appraisal for purchases and refinances. Although typically they have a set person they use it’s always possible to edge your way in. Try to convince them to give you their next appraisal, price it right (as in give an offer that they can’t refuse for the first one) and get it to them really fast and you’ll probably gain their business. That’s how we got the appraiser we use now in my company, he just walked in one day and asked us to give him a chance. Face to face contact will always be better than sending out a flyer to lenders and brokers.

You can also create extremely accurate segments that reflect marketing goals if you collect data on recipients at registration or follow-up requests. It is advised to gather some information on demographics or other data that can boost the sorting process but you can still design helpful segments based on a recipient’s history on your web-site.

Social Spamming – An Email Marketing No-No
I got a call from an email marketing friend of mind just the other day who needed help. Seems I get these kind of calls more and more often – once the folks who have my secret cell phone number find out I know my way around cyber space and that my computer skills go beyond setting up an email account and advanced mouse techniques, then suddenly I become their most trusted (and free) tech support associate.

So, Bill (name changed to protect the family of the guilty) rings me up at 7am, stammering and distraught, unable to string together a sentence of more three words. Immediately I’m thinking horrible tragedy…”Bill, what’s wrong? Did your mother’s kidney transplant go south? Did your son get busted for smoking pot again? Did someone back into your new Jag? No? Well, what then?”

“M-m-m-my Facebook account has been banned!”

“Oh Lord, no-o-o-o-o…. Bill, I’m so sorry.”

Are you laughing? Sure this is kinda funny, but if you use Facebook and other social networking services as part of your email marketing business strategy, getting your account banned can have serious adverse effects when it comes to your email marketing customer and prospect list. 2. Don’t send out too many friend requests at one time. This makes you look like a spammer. How many is too many? Facebook doesn’t specify but typically, twenty at a time is a lot. Gradually build up your friends list over time.

3. Set up a fan page for your email marketing business and identify it as such. This way, people know you’re a marketer before they become your fan, and everything is above board.
