Which is more secure?
Question by michael: Which is more secure?
.
I’m using a program to isolate my laptop while using Internet at a hotel. It is basically a free proxy. Because the connection is SSL, which way is safest to sign into various accounts I have on the internet?
Use the proxy.
Do not use the proxy.
The reason why I ask is because I think because the connection is SSL for the proxy / vpn, it would be possible for the company to decode the passwords somehow?
I heard about this SSL layer / potential password problem from a podcast.
How should I approach this? Which method is safest?
Please include any reasons, or information you may have, to support your answer.
Thanks.

I would say don’t use computers unsecured internet connections for logging into your accounts or typing any personal data since since that info will not be secured even if the site uses encryption. There are ways that others can see that info while in transmission in an unsecured internet connections. So that means don’t use library computers, cyber cafe computers, or any computer that has unsecured wireless connection.

There is considerable risk in using free proxies from unknown sources. Many of these free proxies are what are called hacker pots. They are there waiting for you to fall into their trap so they can steal your information and plant bots on your computer. Once a bot is planted the hacker has control of your machine and can steal credit cards, attack web sites and send out tons of spam all from your IP address.
Some of the free proxies/vpn’s are run by people out to make money. There is nothing wrong with that in principle. However the best case here is that you will get a proxy loaded with advertisements with no real speed to it. The amount of money the owner can make with advertising clicks is really only pennies. Many of these owners supplement their income by key logging everything you do and selling your personal information to advertising companies. Since you have no way to know what the owner is actually doing you need to assume the worst case is true.

Proxies leak information and are not secure.
