Question by : Help with DEERS enrollment!!!?
I just married my soldier last week. he is stationed in ft. irwin cali, and for the time being im still living in virginia. problem is, we re trying to get me enrolled in deers so we can apply for housing obviously so i can live with him on base. so ive been doing some research and it says for me to be enrolled, they need to see an birth certificate, social security card and a marriage license. problem. i have all my personal identification documents here with me in va, and i do NOT have a copy of the marriage license! i have placed an order for a copy of the actually certificate though.. is that the same thing?? basically im asking this, is he unable to enroll me from where he is in cali? do i need to go to a base near me an enroll myself? what do i do??

Once you get your official, stamped copy of the marriage certificate you have to send it to your hubby along with ssn card, birth certificate. He has to enroll you in DEERS you can’t do it. Once you are enrolled in DEERS you can go to a base near you to get your military dependent ID card and can start getting your benefits, ex. commissary shopping, health insurance.
You are waiting on the marriage certificate, not the license. You can go to the recorders office in the county where you were married and get a copy. It usually takes about 2-4 weeks. Once he enrolls you in DEERS they will start paying you BAH (basic allowance for housing) the rate will depend on the area you are living in. Go to this website and put it your hubby’s rank and your zipcode and it will give you the amount of housing allowance you qualify for… www.2009bahrates.com
