Do I need SSL when receiving or sending web based email?
Question by slim: Do I need SSL when receiving or sending web based email?
I opened a gmail account, and I’m importing email from my comcast email accounts (leaving a copy of the mail on the original server), but when I add the comcast account and check the SSL option, gmail can’t connect to the comcast server. Is this a big deal? Do I need SSL? Can someone intercept the packets (if anyone cared to) with somekind of sniffer or rouge router? Thanks!

Normally, SSL is only used for authentication.
The actual email transfers can always be intercepted.
This goes for just about every email provider.
You have nothing to worry about.
