How exactly does laptop internet work…?
Question by Max: How exactly does laptop internet work…?
Okay, so I’m really wishing hard for a laptop this Christmas, and I want to be prepared! My dad’s good with computers (okay- really good) but I don’t think he knows as much about laptops as necessary. So, how does internet work on a laptop? Like, do you have to be in a wi-fi spot (whatever that means) or have a special application, or something? =/ It would be so awesome if you all would help me out on this one!

In a nut shell: If you have a wirelessly enabled laptop (a laptop with WiFi) then your laptop will be able to connect to any network within range, so long as you have correct passwords and authorization where necessary.
To be able to connect at home you would need to have a wireless router. This is what gives out the wireless signal. You can create a password for it so that only people from your family (or anyone you want) can connect to it, so long as they are within range
What do you think? Answer below!

Depends on how you want to connect. Most places today (McDonald’s, Barnes & Noble) offer a WiFi hotspot. To use the built in wireless card on the laptop, you will need ot be in a hotspot. Laptops also tend to have a wired Ethernet connection. This is the same connection on the back of most desktop PCs. You plug an Ethernet cable (commonly Cat 5 or Cat 5e) into it and then into the router or broadband router and away you go. You don’t need anything special beyond that. good luck.

Most laptops connect with the internet exactly like a Desktop. For example if your desktop computer is hooked to the internet with a Ethernet cord then 99% of laptops will have the same connection. The one way laptops are different then desktops is that some have wifi capability for example you can walk down the street to beaners and hook up to the internet wirelessly. If you really wanna be a geek you can buy a wireless router for your house and then you can sit in any room of the house with your laptop and use the internet with no wires. Or if your lucky your neighbor will have a wireless router and you will be able to connect to there internet and mooch off of them for a while
But to answer your question laptop internet connections are the same as desktop connections and they have a bonus of being able to be hooked up wirelessly to the internet.

You either have to provide a source for the signal; subscribe to a cable plan and broadcast your signal throughout your house with a wireless router; or travel to a wireless hot spot like a coffee shop.
You can get at extra cost a card that goes into your pcmcia slot in your laptop and it will receive satellite signals from your cellphone company for about $ 60 and month
Doesn’t matter if your dad is not up to date; he can catch up in a minute just like you did.
