Q&A: How do I register a domain name without using someone like godaddy.com?
Question by macboy987654321: How do I register a domain name without using someone like godaddy.com?
What about just buying a domain name? I mean, how does godaddy (or whoever) buy them?
It seems like the process with a site like godaddy would go like this:
- I tell them the domain that I want (which is not currently being used)
- They somehow buy it
- They then turn around and rent it to me. Then when/if I decide I no longer to pay them they take it away. Or worse, some big company decided they want it and godaddy sells my domain name out from under me.
I wouldn’t mind renting the domain name from someone if they already owned it, but no one does. There must be a way to register the name, I would assume I would go through some agency or something. Godaddy is doing what I am talking about, I just want to know how they do it.

You might want to check out Network Solutions…

Or, you can get a free domain name that redirects to your IP address, if you want to set up your computer to share files via FTP for example. Or, host your own web server. You can purchase your own domain, or get a free sub-domain and then point it to the IP address that is provided to you from your service. They also provide other DNS and Domain services as well.

“No-IP™ provides managed DNS, dynamic DNS , domain registration, email and many other domain related services to over 5 million customer worldwide. Backed by a global network of redundant systems, No-IP ensures fast response and 100% uptime.”

The easiest way to register a domain name is through no-ip.com. You own it for however long you pay for registration.
Godaddy.com registers domain names and sells domain name hosting. Your domain name will be useless unless you can associate an IP address with the domain name.
With godaddy.com you pay them a monthly fee to host your website on their server.
If you go with no-ip.com you can host a server anywhere you want.

I use Yahoo Domains, because first year is only $ 1.99.
To take benefit of this offer, search on google for “Cheap domain names”, and on the right hand side, you will see add for Yahoo domains.
Here is the direct link to the search page:
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=cheapest+domain+name&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
If it doesn’t work, then try the above steps, ie. google search for ‘cheap domain names’.
Once you click on the yahoo add, search for the domain you would like to register. Then simply sign up for one. Again, first year is only $ 1.99.
If you do not wish to continue after the first year, simply cancel the renewal option near the end of the year; otherwise Yahoo will renew your domain automatically using your credit card.
Happy shopping!

Hi – Everyone “rents” the right to own a domain. It’s just the way it works. ICANN is the body that oversees .com and other TLD domains. You can’t buy domains directly from ICANN. You need to be a certified domain seller to be able to sell the domains like Godaddy, register.com, etc.
