I am trying to start a new business and I want to own the domain name of the business. All the sites I can find only offer hosting by the year. Is it possible to outright own a domain name?

You can only own if for a period of time. Your web host or a domain name server can sell it to you. I think the limit might be 5 years, then you have to renew.

You have to do a search at one of the domain registration sites to see if the domain name is available. Then you have to register it for a period of time (1 year to 5 years or so). Try:
Register.com
Godaddy.com
Networksolutions.com
Yahoo.com
The costs varies from $ 6.95 and up.

You own the domain name for a year at a time. It can be renewed annually.
