Question by jimmy_m_espana: Where is a step-by-step website that tells how to host your own website on your own computer that uses cable?
My internet is cable, not dsl. Is there a pretty good website that tells you how to set-up your own website on your own computer that uses cable for internet?

Caution – Your cable provider usually has clauses stating that you can not host your own server unless you pay business rates. Check with them first.
I occasionly run a server on my computer for brief periods, but I finally got a web site from one of the many vendors of web site hosting. I pay only /yr and am very happy with their service.
I use http://www.midphase.com/ that provides virtually unlimited storage and bandwidth. So I have many photos up there. I do not use this site for a business, but they allow you to do so…
If you have any questions, email me.
Hope this helps!

Many internet providers do not allow for hosting a website on your own server unless you have a “business account”. They are usually happy to host a small web page for you as a part of your regular service. If you insist on hosting a website on your own computer, and the volume of data is not great, perhaps your service provider may not notice or care; otherwise, you may need to resort to “dial up” service or need to spend $500 a month (or more) for T1 service. Then you will need to download one of the free Linux based hosting solutions like “clark connect” and install it.
Good luck.

It depends on your operating system. If linux, look for LAMP. If windows look for WAMP. The chance of you effectively running a website on a consumer grade cable company are fairly low. If your cable company doesn’t outright forbid and block such activity, your low upstream speed will guarantee that you will never have a site that can handle more than a token amount of traffic. You’re much better off finding a hosting company.

You may download Apache server. But to run your website online 247, you will have to switch on your computer all the time which will cost you and may damage your computer in the long term.
You may want to consider some paid hostings. Following webhosting site is quite good.

They offer hosting of “unlimited domains” and you will get massive webspace of 200000 MB (200 GB ). They only charge $4.95/month and they also offer “a free Domain Name” and installing service called “Fantastico”. By using Fantastico, you may create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer “Free Website Builder” as well.
