The Freedom to Make Your Own Website

I recently read that Beijing has banned registration of all personal domain names. That means if you were planning to make your own website you would be grounded.

This is just one of the the latest in a long line of moves to censor citizen created content on the web. For the Chinese citizens that already registered a domain name and have made their own website, they have been put under review. Their websites have been put under review by their Internet service providers and are being checked for dangerous content. This follows the recent ban of all of the major social networking websites as well as their Chinese equivalents.

In the future those who want to make their own website in China will need to show both a company chop as well as a business license.

What does this mean to you now that you’re planning to make your own website? Nothing. But is the freedom to make your own website one that many people use? Probably not. More likely it is taken for granted, and those that do start out in this area of the Internet will do so with a hindrance.

That is why I want to share some tips with you that will help you when you make your own website. But to do that we need to know how most people build their websites, at least in the beginning.

Ok, let’s run through the scenario. Excited that we’ve finally decided to take the leap and make our own website, we rush out and find something to code web pages for us and off we go. We’re so excited we churn out pages about every interest we have ever had. And we have a lot of them. Now we put all of our content up on our website. It is a pretty chaotic website, but we’re proud of our achievement. Now anyone that happens along will be able to see our masterpiece and that is our problem. And one, that when you make your own website, you will want to avoid.

You see, by making a convoluted website full of miscellaneous content, you are setting yourself up to be disappointed. Why? Because unless you have a lot of authority on the Internet, you will likely not rank for any of it. The few passers by that happen to find it will be the exception not the rule.

Instead when you make your own website you need to focus on one topic… In other words, you need to find a niche and fill it.

But how do you do that?

That is what I am going to show you and more.

First you will need to brainstorm what you are going to make your website about. This is a very free process that goes into the planning phase. Grab some paper and start writing. Write down everything that you enjoy, movies, hobbies, your job, anything that interests you. Once you’ve found a clear winner you now know what you will make your own website about.

This is very important for several reasons. The first reason is you need to have a topic that you will gain pleasure from when you write about it. If it feels too much like work, you will not have the motivation to keep up with it for very long. When this happens, your chances of ranking in the search engines drop drastically.

Next, by picking one topic and concentrating on that subject, your website becomes an authority over time. This will help you dominate that section of the Internet and your ranking in the SERPs will improve.

The third reason is we need to know how much competition you’ll face when you make your own website. This is done by collecting two pieces of information.

The first piece of data is the number of websites in your selected niche. To illustrate the point, let’s use the example keyword “classic cars”. Since Google is responsible for roughly 85% of all searches preformed on the Internet, we’ll use them. Go to their website and type in your keyword making sure to place it between quotation marks as I have done in the cars example.

What this does is return the exact number of websites with that exact phrase. This is a very important step and one you should always do before you make your own website. Let’s say that our search returned 10,000 websites.

Now we need to know how many people actually search for our keyword each month. Most of the larger search engines make this information public, make sure that you don’t mix and match data from them though or your numbers will be off. Since we used Google, we will use their AdWords Keyword Tool and set the match type from “Broad” to “Exact”. Again this is important to keep things accurate.

When the page comes to life we see that there is a impressive amount of search volume, 100,000 people look for classic cars each month.

To calculate the competition, you’ll face divide the number of websites by the number of searchers. In this example there are 10 visitors for every website. If their would have only been 100 people interested in our theme each month that would have meant that there was only 1 person for every 100 websites. As you can see, if that had been the case, then competition would have been much heavier.

While very simple, this method is also incredibly powerful when you make your own website.

Since we’ve taken the time to plan and research our niche before jumping into making our own website, we have another tool we can use.

When you go to register your domain name, do yourself and favor and pick out one that has your keyword prominently in it. This will make it easier for you to rank for your chosen theme. Why? Because search engines will partially base your websites relevance by how well the content on the page matches your web address.

If you were to make your own website about yellow hula hoops, but your web address was PinkPigeonParachutes.com, there wouldn’t be much relevance to speak of. Unless of course that was the name of the company that produces the hula hoops.
