Many small businesses have started out with these free websites before moving up to having their own full-fledged online stores with their own domain names and paid web hosting. The one drawback of these free services is that they will place advertising banners on your site to offset the expenses of web hosting and maintenance, but you can also solicit your own advertising.

There are a number of ways you can use your website to make money. You can sign up with pay per click (PPC) or CPM advertising networks, which will place contextual ads on your site. You will get paid every time a visitor to your site clicks on an ad or by the number of page views generated by the ads on the site. Or you can sign up with affiliate programs, and sell their products on your site. The way this works is that visitors to your site can click on a link that directs them to the merchant’s site, and you get paid a commission when they buy something or when they sign up for a free offer.

Once you build a website online for free, there are two important steps you have to take before you can use it to make money: you have to place interesting content on it and then build targeted traffic to your site. You have to follow these steps before you can monetize your site; how could you make money if nobody, or very few people, visits your site? You have to give them a reason to go to the site by providing them with something useful. Having too many ads on your site also hurts your credibility, particularly when you’re still building the reputation of your site.

You will also have to ensure that your site is listed on the indexes of search engines so people can find your site if they are researching on a certain topic. To do this, you can submit your URL to the search engine’s site submission pages; however, not all submitted URLs are added to their index. A more sure-fire way is to link your page to another site that already appears in site engine indexes.

There may be some disadvantages when you build a website online for free. One, the number of web pages you get will be limited. Two, by using a free hosting solution, you may seem unprofessional and make people hesitant to deal with you. Three, by not having your own unique domain name, visitors may have trouble remembering your URL. Still, a free web hosting site is a good place to start, and once you start making money, you can upgrade your business site, either by paying for premium services on the free site host or by registering your own domain name and moving your site to a commercial web hosting service.
