It isn’t really that complicated. To get a domain name, you need to buy it from a domain name registrar. Domains names are pretty cheap: only around $10 a year.
The biggest name in registrars is http://godaddy.com . They also provide web hosting, and an easy WYSIWYG site builder for getting started.
I would tend to recommend a host like http://webthosting.com for the actual host. Your registrar and host don’t have to be the same company. WebT Hosting is reliable and cheap. They only charge $1.95 a month for their basic hosting package, which is just about the cheapest you’ll ever find on the internet. They also have domain names for as little as $5 a year.
As for a website builder. You _could_ use a WYSIWYG application like Microsoft Expression or Adobe Dreamweaver, but I don’t recommend it.
To become a good webmaster you should learn how to write your own HTML and CSS. Later on you could try learning JavaScript and PHP.

Great question! It is indeed a complex problem. I’ve outlined the five services (I wish there were less, but that’s the way it works) you need to make a website: software, content, bandwidth, server, and domain. You will find most hosting services will gladly bundle all these together for a fee. It’s your choice on which you want to expend: effort or money. Here is what those services actually mean:
Plugins: Websites nowdays sit on a framework of software that understands concepts like blogs, comments sections, reader submissions, etc. That framework determines what your website can “do” in terms of dynamic content. People make plugins for that framework so you can make your site do more. If you care about customizing that stuff, make sure that framework is Apache. If not, accept a hosting service’s proprietary blend that looks the best for your needs. It takes months or years of dedication to understand that stuff. Alternatively, you can use no plugins and make a more primitive website without any dynamic content. This is nice in way, you can just make a text file called “index.html” and fill it with your crazy rants, place it on a server, and instantly let the world know what a crazy nut you are. At the other extreme, you can get a big hosting service to let you type your blog into one of their own websites and translate your crazy into a neatly formatted website without knowing a thing about software at all. If you choose the last route, you will need a hosting service that combines all these described services together.
Content: The actual words/pictures/videos you are going to deliver. Enough said. In the 21st century, the big websites have their members deliver the content. If that’s what you want, focus on getting the right content-builder. If not, focus on content.
Bandwidth: This is the internet service provider (ISP), the cables and routers connecting your server (more on that later) to the rest of the world. If you have a company host your website, they will have their own ISP, and you will choose/negotiate bandwidth through the hosting company. This determines how many megabytes of content your website can deliver each month, and how fast. Your ISP also determines what your IP address is. Consumer ISP’s (like the one you are probably using now to read this) don’t work well for hosting websites because your IP will change and they severely limit the bandwidth going from your computer to the world.
Server: The computer(s) that deliver the content to the ISP. You can turn your existing computer into a server by loading Apache, but as said before your consumer ISP isn’t going to work well. Commercial hosting services put your website onto a sliver of one server to keep costs down (assuming your website is relatively small) and bargain better prices with commercial ISPs.
Domain: the service that takes people who type in your URL “http://www.example.com” to your server’s IP address “123.456.789.012″. You have to pay for this (can’t do it yourself) because there are large networks of computers around the world dedicated to making sure that domain name points in the right direction.
TO PUT THIS ALL TOGETHER: A common strategy is to find a hosting service that can provide the plugins, bandwidth, and server all together. They’ll give you an IP address you can see your website from. Then go to a domain registrar and pay to have your website name (domain) linked to that IP address.
A nerdier strategy is to find a hosting service that provides a framework for the plugins, bandwidth, and server. You find plugins that do what you want, or program your own, and then get a domain registrar to link the IP address as above.
Or, just get a blog on one of those blogging websites. They handle everything for you and you can remain blissfully unaware of the horrendous amounts of code, sweat, and tears underlying the modern website.

Hello, This is my 1st answer on here I saw your question and wanted to give it a try because I have experience with this.
and there is usually an icon entitled fantastico that will guide you through the process of automatically installing things like blogs, word press, image galleries, forums etc, and even content management systems (CMS) like Joomla , etc. which are like pre made websites.
I have made many websites, and used several hosting services and found some to be better than others.
I will Try to give a simple but detailed answer.
I would suggest doing a search for web hosting services reviews to get a good provider.
After you decide on a hosting service, you will need to decide on a domain name (the name of of your website or the url address for it) ie, yourwebsitename.com or .net or .org .biz or whichever you choose it is self explanatory when you type in the name you want for your site it will show which are available and you just pick one or more
Just go to their site, whoever you decide on, and it will let you enter your desired domain name and it will tell you If that name is available, if not, keep trying until you get a domain name you are happy with (hopefully a short one people can remember and type in easily, and that is maybe descriptive of your sites contents) and then it will lead you through a short series of pages and you pay, and they will e-mail you your login details for your website and usually a thing called a Cpanel, short for Control Panel .
The c panel is like a control panel with file managers etc. but don’t let it intimidate you because it isn’t as complicated as it looks at first sight
My current Cpanel also has 4 different site builders like template express etc, templates for ready made pages that you can just add Your content to though I haven’t used them.
Many hosting services also offer custom designed pages for a fee.
Different hosts have different options, the one I am using has Unlimited GB’s of storage Space, Unlimited GB’s of Transfer (Bandwidth) and no hidden fees. Beware that some (many) hosts charge you extra if you get enough visits to your website go over your allotted band width (transfer or usage). My host also has unlimited domain name Hosting, (in case you ever want another website you only have to add another domain name) Unlimited E-Mail Accounts, for example, you@yourwebsite.com and I think like 4 free Site Builder programs, free domain for Life , free Instant Setup, and so forth. There seems to be a few good hosts like that so I STRONGLY advise reading customers reviews of different hosting providers, and their experiences, Before you choose one, Just google or do a search for ” web hosting reviews “.
After you get your hosted acount, you can use the site builders or even easier it seems to me, use the automated installers like Fantastico etc. for stuff like word press blogs (I am using a wordpress installation for the main website on a few sites right now and I have a few that I made custom html pages for the entire site) or the site builders for making html pages using pre- made tmplate pages and putting in your own text and images. If you use HTML and a site builder the “Home” page will Have to be named index.html
I find using most of the blog software like wordpress that can be automatically installed for you from your Cpanel using fantastico to be easy and straight forward to use, similar to using a social site and word press now has an automatic update feature in the ‘dashboard’ (admin section) with like 1 click to update now which is Great )and really simple) because they seem to have updates fairly often, and in the old days I had to download them and re upload to my site and manually install them
In short:
Find a good hosting service.
Select your domain name, pay them, and you are set to begin building your website.
I hope this helps.

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: http://www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.
As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.
You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:

They also offer “Free Site Builder” that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program. (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get) You can use this service optionally. You can also create the pages offline with your favorite program (DreamWeaver, FrontPage, Microsoft Publisher, etc.), and then upload them to your web host. This is another easy way to get your website online.
******IMPORTANT********
* This service was awarded “The Best Web Host OF The Year”.
* If you sign up for this service you will have $75 credits to advertise your website with the google & yahoo search engines for free!
* You Can Register A Free Domain or Use Your Existing Domains. They Support All Domain Names.
